So I found today’s bibliomancy find a little curious. When I think of tree magick, I think of the Celtic tree months. And the month of Alder (Fearn) takes place from March 18- April 14th. Therefore, it represents the energy of Spring and new beginnings. But here we are in the middle of Winter, far from that energy. So what does Alder have to say to us this month?
According to The Women’s Dictionary of Symbols and Sacred Objects, Alder represents several deities, and is a symbol of resurrection. In the Romano-Celtic world, it was associated with the prince of satyrs and Dionysus and all the orgiastic energy that represents.
The resurrection part rings true, with this being the start of a new year, but the rest isn’t necessarily my jam right now.
In The Witch’s Guide to Wands, Gypsey Elaine Teague tells us that Alder is a feminine tree, representing both Bran and Freyja. She goes on to say that Alder wood is used for guitars, and that wands made from Alder are useful in water rituals and to protect against fire. It also has properties that make it useful in brewing, distilling, and cooking large feasts.
So between the feasting, brewing, musical, orgiastic connections of Alder, I guess the lesson here is to celebrate more this moon cycle? My birthday is coming up, so that’s not out of the question, but I usually spend this time of year in quiet contemplation and try to plan my life for the upcoming year. Maybe the lesson is to enjoy my time while I have it instead, because tomorrow is never promised.
What do you think? How would you read the energies of Alder?
Blessed be! <3
